Packing recommendation for trekking in Nepal

What Equipment Do I Need?

It is important to pack the right clothing and equipment for your safe adventure travel in Nepal, Tibet & Bhutan. Trekking and climbing trips in the Himalayas would not be safe and successful without proper clothing and equipment so you have to be very careful while packing and make sure that you will pack the right equipment for a safe and pleasant trip. 

What you need to pack mostly depends on the different seasons you travel, and how high you go. You will be walking from low valleys to high valleys, so it is important to have enough layers to use it at appropriate weather conditions and altitudes.

Head  Gear:

Sun Cap/Hat: Sun Hat is very useful for adventure trekking in mountains. It protects your face from the sun and blocks UV rays. Project face from sunburn

Beanie/ Woolen Hat or Fleece Hat: Beanie or woolen Hat Or Fleece Hat helps to keep your head warm in cold weather conditions

Neck Gaiter Or Buff: Neck Gaiter is useful for neck and ear cover, and keeps warm

Balaclava ( Optional): Protects face, head and neck from wind and cold. It should fit under a woolen hat or helmet during climbing

Hand Gear: 

Liner Gloves: Liner gloves should be light and thin fleece gloves that keep hands safe and warm from the cold temperature. It should be comfortable using inside mittens or snow gloves which absorb sweat and increase warmth

Wind Stopper Fleece Gloves: Wind stopper fleece gloves are great gloves which are warm and completely block the wind. It is useful for high altitude trek days

Winter Gloves: Winter Gloves are best for snow trek and climb as it protects our hands from frostbite. They should be comfortable to wear, and grip the items 

Foot Wear:

Regular Hiking Socks: Hiking socks should be lightweight, cushioning along the base of feet, mostly made by merino wool which is smooth, prevents sweat and blisters

Heavy Socks: Extra cushioning socks are ideal for tough hikes and colder temperatures. Merino wool socks are recommended as they are much warmer. These socks are good up to knee high

Sports Sandals: Sports Sandals are used at overnight stays in lodges in morning and evening. They should be comfortable to use over the liner socks

Hiking Shoes: Hiking shoes are lightweight, flexible and comfortable. They are good for day walks in lower altitude valleys. Hiking Shoes are useful as camp shoes when staying at lodges in high altitude

Hiking Boots: Hiking Boots are slightly heavier than regular running/ trekking shoes. Hiking Boots should have ankle protection, waterproof and should have a thick sole which is suitable for walking in rough and rugged terrain

Snow Gaiters: Snow Gaiters are best for hiking in winter or at snow walk. It stops snow from getting into your boots, protects your feet, and keeps it dry

Micro Spikes: They are metal spikes to use under hiking boots. Micro Spikes are good to use on slippery surfaces, ice and snow walk 

Inner Wear:

Under Wear: They should be moisture-wicking, quick-dry. Under Wear should be made of synthetic material, like polyester, or merino wool
Sports Bras ( For Woman): They are best for hiking. They dry quickly


Lightweight Thermal Layer Top & Bottom: Thermal layers should be lightweight, recommended of merino wool, which is warm, regulates your body temperature and allows moisture to escape. Base Thermals should fit your body to keep it warm at cold temperatures

Midweight Thermal Layer Top & Bottom: Mid weight thermal layers are good to use between lightweight thermal and outer layers of heavy trek clothes. Merino wool is recommended, which is best, comfortable and warmer

Hiking Pants: Should be breathable, quick-drying fabric, lightweight fabric resists water, wind

Thermal Trousers/ Pant Or Fleece Trouser or Pant: These pants are good for winter walking. Fleece pants can be used alone, or as mid- layer in extremely cold weather

Synthetic Insulated Pant Or Gore Tex Pant: They are made to wear at high altitude trek in extreme cold weather. It is insulated, protects against wind and cold

T- Shirts (Short Sleeved): T- shirts are useful to use during low valley sunny day hiking. It should be quick drying fabric- polyester or spandex. Comfortable stretch

Long-Sleeve Shirts: Long Sleeves Shirts are good in walking in sunny days as it protect from the Sun to body and hands. Red or Black are best for mountain sunshine

Fleece Jacket: Keeps you warm at cold temperature. It is soft and comfortable. In extreme cold temperatures, it is used as a mid layer top

Gore Tex Jacket Or Synthetic Insulated Jacket: They should be waterproof, breathable and windproof. It protects from rain, snow and wind

Down Jacket: Down Jacket made of goose down, best against cold temperatures. They are great to keep you warm at high altitude treks and in extreme cold weather

Travel Gear: 

Duffle Bag: Duffle bags are made from waterproof materials. You will pack all your trekking clothing in a duffle bag, and it will be carried by our sherpa porter. 80-90 L duffel is best for trekking for 2-3 weeks trekking in mountains. 

Day Pack: Day pack will be carried by you. Day pack will help you to store the items that you will frequently need during your trek. You should carry your personal valuable belongings including passport and money, camera, rain gear, snacks etc. at your day pack.

Pack Cover: It is a cover to protect your day pack. It is waterproof so keeps your day pack dry and safe in rain and snowfall

Thermarest Mattress (Cell Foam): Thermarest Mattress is thick and most comfortable closed- cell foam mattress. It is used during tented camp staying at trek and climb

Inflatable Pillow: It is only recommended for camping trekking or tented camp sleep for trek or climb

Down Sleeping Bag: Sleeping bags are the most important items you need at trek to sleep on cold nights. Sleeping bags will keep you warm during sleep at the guest house. Sleeping bags are filled with goose down or synthetic material

Sleeping Bag Liner: Sleeping bag liner is an extra warmth layer in the sleeping bag for sleeping on cold nights

Waterproof Stuff Sacks: To keep your stuff safe from water or snow damage 

Water Bottles: For drinking water through the trip. Nalgene bottles are popular for trekking in mountains

Trekking Poles: Trekking Poles are good for walking in mountains. It should have breathable Foam grips to hold comfortably. They should have adjustment locks to adjust accordingly to slope angle for users

Pocket Swiss Knife: They should be small and lightweight. Best for camping, outdoor and trek days

Small Padlocks: Small Padlock with Keys lock for day pack and duffle bags

Medical & Personal Items:

Sun Glasses: Recommend Polarized, and UV protected sunglasses for trekking in high altitude mountains. 

Headlamp with spare bulb: Headlamp or Headlight are affixed to the head so it is best for night use on trek/ climb days. Few spare bulb 

Spare Batteries: Spare batteries in case the batteries get dead at cold temperature

Sun Cream: SPF 40 or SPF 50+ are best recommended sunscreen for trekking in mountains

Lip Guard: Keeps your lips healthy and prevent the chances of sun damage and cracked lips

Moisturizer/ Lotion: Help to protect your skin from snow/ sun born

Zip-loc Bags: Ziploc bags are useful for keeping basic items, zip it and pack at your day pack or duffle bag

Earplugs: Earplugs are good while sleeping to avoid noise from the nearby freeway or a snoring partner

Water Purification Tablets: To purify the spring water / storage water from mountains and get it ready to drink. 

Toiletry Kit: Toilet Paper, Wet Tissue, Toothpaste, Tooth Brush, Soap, Towel, Garbage Bag etc

Others: Book(s) & Camera, Power Banks etc

First-Aid Kit:
