Is Everest Base Camp Trek doable for everyone? Why is the EBC Trek Tough?
Everest Base Camp Trek is doable for all the trekkers who have excellent health conditions and are physically in shape. High altitude walking and thin air makes Everest Base Camp trek tough. At higher altitude, dry wind, dust and low humidity could ache your throat, and you may be coughing continuously which will make your trek even more difficult. So, be safe from cold and cough! However if you are an active person, do gym regularly and do outdoor sports such as cycling, swimming, running or hiking in hills often, and are trained yourself prior to coming to this trek, you may find this trek relatively easy but not everyone, not always.
Training for EBC Trek?
For a safe and comfortable trek, you should train yourself properly and prepare for a minimum of 3 to 4 months prior to your Everest Base Camp trek departure. If possible, go to the gym often, walk on an incline on the treadmill, do squats to build up strength in your legs. Go for long hikes or walks, and do outdoor sports such as cycling, swimming etc. Even at your work, take a stairs walk rather than using an elevator.
During Trek Days: Walk slow and steady at your own pace. Drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated. Make sure that you have a good sleep, and you are eating properly. Listen to your guide, and follow his advice for altitude trek safety.
How is this itinerary planned?
Trekking in altitude has no safe shortcuts. You have to be at altitude, take time to acclimatize, and adjust yourself in the local weather and environment to have safe and pleasant trekking in mountains. Thus, at this trek to Everest Base Camp, we take you slow and steady at your pace. We trek about 5 to 6 hours every day. Even on day walks, we walk slowly, and take enough breaks. Two important days of acclimatization are planned during Everest Base Camp Trek days. First acclimatization day is at Namche Bazaar at 3400m, allowing our body to acclimatize and adjust the altitude, and second day of acclimatization day is planned in Dingboche at 4410m for final trek acclimatization. With these two days of acclimatization days, your trek to Everest Base Camp will be on the safe side.

For altitude, there is no need to take a preventative medication before your trek starts. As you ascend, if you start the symptoms of high altitude sickness, you could then take Diamox for treatment ( 250 mg every 6 hours) till it heals.
However, if you want to be very preventive as you ascend at altitude, you could start taking a preventive dose of Diamox, and if, so, you are recommended to take a maximum of 250 mg a day- at evening after dinner which helps you for sound sleep (Or take 125 mg in the morning, after breakfast and 125 mg at night, after dinner). If you start taking a Diamox, continue taking it till you descend back.
In addition, you should be bringing your personal medications you regularly use for your existing medical illness.
