The Saptarishi Caves have great spiritual significance. They're located below Mount Kailash and are one of the highlights of the Inner Parikrama. They are believed to be the place where the seven ancient sages (Saptarishis) meditated. The caves sit at about 6000 metres. To get to the caves from the high-altitude base camp, there is a very steep technical climb. This makes them one of the most challenging sections of the trek. On that climb, you'll feel every metre of altitude.
The spiritual connection offered by the caves to the soul and spirit of Kailash is also strengthened by the experience of completing the Inner Parikrama. Today you'll embark on the first day of your walking journey around Mount Kailash, the Parikrama, departing from Darchen and walking for 5 to 6 hours via the broad Lha Chu valley. This is the most significant Day in your whole journey. You begin your Day by awakening before the sun and climbing up to Dolma-la pass, the highest point of your walk at 5,650 metres. The air is thin, the pass is steep, and it's hard to push against the cold air. Pilgrims from around the world have all walked this track for one reason: to have their souls changed forever.
As you climb, eventually, you'll come across something called Shiva Tsal. This is thought by many people to be where you die and are reborn as a new, improved version of yourself. Many pilgrims who pass through here drop old clothes or belongings here as a sign of letting go of their past.
The top of the pass is marked by the Dolma Stone, a massive stone covered with thousands of prayer flags from Hindus and Buddhists from all over the globe. At this stone, people will lie down, pray, sing and make offerings, making it an incredibly emotional experience that very few words can express.
As you walk back down to Darchen, you will walk past the beautiful Gauri Kund, a green lake that Hindus believe belongs to Parvati (Shiva's wife). The trail levels out, then continues to take you closer to Darchen (the starting point of the trek). This will take around 12-14 hours. A very long and difficult day, but many pilgrims say this is the most powerful experience of their lives.
At the Dolma-La Pass, pilgrims leave something personal behind (clothing, hair, etc.) as they prepare to start their journey by leaving their old selves behind and starting anew.

You will begin the Day with a trip from Darchen on foot and by vehicle to the Inner Kora zone around Mount Kailash. You will also have an opportunity to visit ancient caves where monastics have meditated over a period of time in complete silence, and visit some tiny old shrines that few people will ever have the opportunity to see.

The Inner Kora is a 34km walk around the inside of Mount Kailash, starting from Darchen and leading you into the very centre of the Kailash Mountain. You'll begin your parikrima at Darchen and continue to Asthapad, which is the entrance into the inner sanctum of Mount Kailash.
Your journey will then bring you to Nandi Parvat, the sacred hill of Nandi, and then to Atmalingam, a naturally occurring Shiva lingam with enormous spiritual significance. After that, you'll proceed to Saptarishi Cave, the location where the seven gods have meditated, before returning to Darchen. And in doing so, you'll have completed one of the world's most sacred and powerful pilgrimage walks.

The walking is over and it's time to go home by driving east over the Tibetan Plateau back to Saga. The road is the same as when you walked there. But it's different now that you've finished the kora. And you're now a different person because of it.
The drive allows you time to reflect on everything you've seen and done. And for many pilgrims on this long pilgrimage, it'll be a quiet time thinking about their travels for one last time before returning to Nepal. In Saga, you can get some rest, have a nice meal and sleep comfortably before continuing your journey home.

The Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is the most essential document to enter the Tibetan region and is mandatory for all foreign tourists on the Kailash Inner Kora Tour Itinerary. The Mount Kailash region, being close to the international border, lies within a restricted military zone and therefore requires additional clearance including a Military Permit and in some cases a Foreign Affairs Permit.
