Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most classic and scenic treks in Annapurna region. Ultimate goal of this trek is to reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4130m at the south base of Annapurna, which is the great highlight of this trek. Annapurna Base Camp has dramatic close-up panoramic views of Annapurna South (7219m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Fishtail (6993m), Annapurna IV (7454m), and other mountain peaks. On clear weather days, sunrise and sunset views of these mountains are spectacular from Annapurna Base Camp.
Trek Route to Annapurna Base Camp:
Annapurna Base Camp Trek has a good and well-maintained trail route throughout the trek. Trails are safe, and comfortable for walking. Annapurna Base Camp trek starts from Pokhara, drives to Nayapul, Birethanthi, then trek through many local villages, lush green valleys, riverside areas and farming lands and terraces. When you reach to Ghorepani ( 2800m) & Poon Hill (3210m), you will have spectacular panoramic views of central mountains views including Annapurna I ( 8091m), Dhawalagiri (8167m), Nilgiri (6430m), Annapurna South (7219m) & Fishtail (6993m). Himalayan views from Poon Hill are just incredible.
Further trek continues through rhododendron forest uphill and downhill, hiking via great hill spots of Tadapani villages and Chhomrong villages. The final leg of the trek from Chhomrong continues to the natural narrow valley between Fishtail and Annapurna mountain ranges, to Machhapuchre Base Camp then valleys open to dry and deserted hill up-to Annapurna Base Camp. From Annapurna Base Camp, we retrace back the same way to Chhomrong, then to Jhinu Danda, and drive back to Pokhara.
How difficult is Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
Annapurna Base Camp Trek is considered moderate trekking in Nepal. As this trek involves walking in many ups and downs in the hill almost every day, for novice trekkers, this could be slightly difficult but it is still easy compared to Everest Base Camp Trek. Travelers with good health, physically in shape could easily trek to Annapurna Base Camp without much difficulty. At Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you have to walk 5-6 hours every day. As this trek involves walking thousands of stone step ups and downs, it could be hard for those who are new to walking stone steps and rough terrain in mountains. You do not have to be super fit to plan this trek, or do not have to run the marathon, but hiking experience is necessary.
Hike outdoors at least twice a week, and cardio training for 2-3 months regularly prior to coming to this trek would prepare you the best for safe and successful trek in Annapurna Base Camp.
You will start this trek from the altitude of 827m from sea level so you will have enough time to acclimatize at the trek days itself before reaching ABC. Annapurna Base Camp Trek does not involve any serious or technical high-altitude trekking. You will only stay two nights above 3000m on this trek- One night at MBC at altitude of 3700 m and another night at ABC at altitude of 4130 m. Every other day, the trek will be between 2000m to 3210m altitude. So, trekking in Annapurna Base Camp is fun, pleasure and an incredible scenic mountain trek experience.
When is the best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp?
Best time considered for trekking in Annapurna Base Camp is March, April & May, and September, October & November. These months have great weather, clear days, excellent visibility, and relatively longer daylight. Early December is also considered a good time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp

After a lunch in Tikhedhunga, another 1 hour and 30 min walk will be steep uphill (thousands of stone steeps) to reach to Uller for overnight tonight. Ulleri is a nice local village with great landscapes and mountain view.

Poon Hill is the most popular view point. Poon Hill has great panoramic sunrise views of Annapurna South (7219m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Annapurna I & Barashikher ( 8091m), Dhawalagiri (8167m), Nilgiri (6420m), and more than 15 other mountain views of central himalayan region of Nepal. It also has an incredible valley view of Kali Gandaki & Mustang as well. It is a great place for photography.
Return back to Ghorepani at our lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, we hike to the mountain ridge, then descend to the valley, and finally uphill to Tadapani for overnight stay. Today, most of the trail walking will be in an interesting rhododendron forest section. Tadapani, has a close-up view of Annapurna South (7219m) & Hiunchuli (6441m).

From Tadapani, the trail leads downhills to Kimrong Khola, across the bridge then follows a gradual uphill trail in the valley to Chhomrong. This walk is nice and pleasant in nature and incredible in scenery.

Trek from Chhomrong gradually descend to Chhomrong Khola, cross the bridge then uphill to Sinuwa hill. From Sinuwa, the trail will be through the narrow valley through the forest hill till Bamboo (trail could be slippery in this section).

Walking from the Himalaya Hotel towards Hinku valley, then over treeline zones onward to dry and deserted hill sections uphill to reach Deurali. It is a nice little spot for tea break.

From here, we walk a rocky trail uphill, then to walk below the big hill, popularly known as avalanche section trail. On winter days, or heavy snowfall days, this section is likely to get avalanches from hill top so have to do careful walking here.
After this, the trail goes straight uphill to Machhapuchre Base Camp or MBC. Here, the valley opens up with magnificent views of Fishtail, Gangapurna and other mountains. The Landscape in MBC is impressive. Evening rest and acclimatization. Overnight stay in MBC.

Today, we will descend from Annapurna Base Camp. We will use the same trail return back from ABC to MBC, then all the way down to Bamboo for tonight overnight. From Annapurna Base Camp at the altitude of 4130m to the Bamboo at the altitude of 2300m, you will have a long descent today so you have big relief if you have any high altitude sickness during your stay in ABC. Overnight stay in Bamboo.

Today, we have an easy trek back to Chhomrong village, then a short but deep descent on a hill through the stone steps to Jhinu Danda. Today's trek is great with greenery, farming land, and a terrace walk with incredible mountain sceneries.

Afternoon, we will visit a hot spring (15 min downhill from the village), at the riverbank of Modi River, for a natural hot water bath. This hot spring in Jhinu Danda is great with forest and nature along with the riverbank of Modi River. Enjoying a great time here, we return back to Jhinu Danda in the evening. Today is the last night staying in the mountains so you have a great opportunity to enjoy your last mountain night with your trek crew and fellow trekkers. Overnight stay in Join Danda.

Followed by breakfast at the lodge, we then trek down along the Modi Riverside at the great green natural valley to Kyumi, then drive back to Pokhara by private vehicle. Your meals during your stay in Kathmandu and in Pokhara will be on a bed & breakfast plan. We will host a welcome dinner and a farewell dinner in Kathmandu. Any additional meals during your stay in cities will be at your own expense.
During this ABC Trek, your meals are included as part of our package. You will have a choice of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, as well as tea/coffee during your trekking days with us. We serve foods from guesthouses, prepared by trained local chefs. We always ensure that your food is fresh and hygienic. We also provide seasonal fruits every day for your trek days.
For this ABC Trek, we use 4-star deluxe luxury hotels in Kathmandu, Hotel Shanker- Heritage Hotel or Hotel Barahi Kathmandu or similar standard hotel to ensure your stay is comfortable. In Pokhara, we use Hotel Landmark Pokhara or similar standard hotel to your pleasent stay before and after the trek.
During the trek, you will be staying in mountain lodges and guest houses owned by local peoples, offering a nice and comfortable experience. You will have attached bathroom and hot shower facilities during your stays in Ulleri, Ghorepani & Chhomrong. Other places will have regular mountain lodges, neat, clean and comfortable.

Bal Bahadur Tamang was born in Solukhumbu. After completing his eighth grade, he left his village and went to Jiri to work as a porter. His first experience as a porter was to carry a big sack of rice from Jiri to Lukla. He has carried as heavy as 60 kg of load on his back as a porter.
