Overview

Annapurna Circuit Trek is the most classic trekking in the entire Annapurna region. No doubt, Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. This trek is very scenic, incredible with landscapes and himalayan valleys. This trek offers magnificent views of the Annapurna massif itself and incredible views of Annapurna region himalayan panorama.

This trek involves walking mainly in two river valleys, Marshyangdi River Valley and Kali Gandaki River valley encircling the massive Annapurna, and all the Annapurna region mountains peaks throughout this trek.

Image 2

The Tilicho side route, branching off from Manang, offers fewer crowds and spectacular views of peaks like Tilicho, Gangapurna, and Annapurna II, but it also involves narrower, more exposed trails and potential rockfall zones—demanding good fitness, balance, and caution. After visiting the pristine turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake, trekkers rejoin the main trail to tackle Thorong La Pass (5,416m), the trek’s highest and most physically challenging point. The descent leads into the sacred village of Muktinath, an important pilgrimage site, before continuing through the Kali Gandaki Valley, one of the world’s deepest gorges.

Tilicho Lake Trek in Annapurna Circuit:
Tilicho Lake, situated at approx. altitude of 4919m from sea level, is the highest altitude situated lake in the world. Tilicho Lake is incredible. Massive towering view of Tilicho Peak (7134m) and panorama of other Annapurna peaks are spectacular from here.

This lake trek is through the rough trail, less developed and has some steep section trek trails. Tilicho Lake trek separates from Manang to Khansar village, then to Tilicho Base Camp hotel to Tilicho Lake, then return to Yak Kharka to join Annapurna Circuit Trek route.

Important Trip Note

The Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake Trek is a stunning high-altitude adventure that combines the classic Annapurna Circuit with a detour to Tilicho Lake (4,919m)—one of the highest lakes in the world. This trek involves challenging terrain, high passes (like Thorong La at 5,416m), and unpredictable mountain weather, so physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and mental preparation are essential. The trail to Tilicho Lake can be narrow and exposed in sections, especially after Manang, and may be prone to landslides—extra caution and flexibility in the itinerary are advised. Always check weather conditions and trail status, particularly in the Tilicho and Thorong La areas. Teahouse accommodation is available throughout, but facilities become more basic at higher altitudes. Carry cash, as ATMs are not available along the trail, and pack appropriately for cold nights, potential snow, and long hiking days. Trekking insurance that covers high-altitude evacuation is highly recommended.

Upon reaching the hilltop, vegetation ends; walking is straight and a wide range of river valleys starts. From here, the entire views of Annapurna Range are majestic, entirely surrounded. From Pisang, there are two routes to Manang, Upper Route & Lower Route. If you want to go through the upper route (we recommend), the route through Upper Pisang via Geru, the scenery is outstanding. It feels like we are horizontally in front of the majestic peaks. The panoramic views of the mountain peaks, such as Annapurna, Pisang peak, and several others will definitely allure us. We notice the contrast in the landscape and vegetation from today. The cold, dry climate creates a much harsher environment. We will retrace back to Braga village for lunch, take a short look at Barge monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery of Manang village. Another half an hour brings us to Manang overnight.

The Ultimate destination of our Annapurna Circuit Trek! Cross to Thorong-la, 5416m- the highest passes of the world. Early start is essential thus we would start our walking in the morning approx of 4 to 4.30 depending on seasons and weather conditions. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to attempt the top, the initial first hour is pretty tough as it is straight up hill till to high camp, then gradual walk onward, however, each minute is hard and memorable. Altitude can be a problem, so slow and continuous walking is required. Reaching the top is an achievement. The dramatic views of entire mountains are just amazing. Enjoy your time here then prepare for the long descent all the way down to Muktinath at altitude of 3800m, you would love to be back to this altitude as you are doing a lot of ups and downs. Muktinath is an important pilgrimage place for both Hindus and Buddhist. The area hosts a Vishnu temple and a Monastery nearby. Muktinath itself demonstrates the religious harmony in Nepal.

Things to Know About Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake

The Annapurna Circuit Trek via Tilicho Lake is a spectacular variation of the classic Annapurna route, adding a visit to Tilicho Lake (4,919m)—one of the world’s highest lakes—before crossing the Thorong La Pass (5,416m). This route offers a dramatic mix of landscapes, from subtropical forests and deep gorges to alpine deserts and snow-capped peaks, alongside diverse cultures including Gurung, Thakali, and Tibetan-influenced communities. The trail is more remote and demanding after Manang, particularly the section to Tilicho Lake, which can be narrow and landslide-prone. Proper acclimatization and physical preparation are essential due to the high altitudes and long trekking days.

  • What would happen if I could not continue this trek due to altitude sickness?

We will take you slow and steady so I am sure that you will be fine as we go. Our guide will advise you for safe trek, safe eat and sound sleep. Despite all the effort we make, if your body has a hard time to acclimatize at altitude, you may suffer from altitude sickness. If you get altitude sickness, we first provide you with high altitude medicine, and wait if you will be fine to continue the trek. However, if your sickness gets worse, you have to descend immediately. Our guide will take you down to lower altitude. If you are still suffering from altitude, and your health gets worse and worse, then you will immediately have to be back to the city for further treatment for your safety. The only quick way to get out of the mountain when you're sick is to take a helicopter evacuation so you should have travel insurance that covers you for helicopter evacuation to this trip.

  • Do I need travel insurance for this trek?

Yes, you need travel insurance to join this trek with us. Your travel insurance must cover for emergency helicopter evacuation, medical expenses and trip cancellation.

We had an absolutely amazing trip organized by Chet! Thank you so much Chet for going above and beyond for us! We had planned to do the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake in October 2022 but unfortunately due to bad weather, we didn't make it up to Thorong La and Tilicho Lake - after Pisang. However we managed to do Ghorepani -Poon Hill. Everything was very well organized but mountain weather is very unpredictable. All in all, it was a wonderful experience.

Our guide, Navaraj, was really professional and fun and one of the best guides we've worked with. He ensured everything was well organized and we had an absolute blast with him! He tried to get us the best accommodations along the trail and for that I'm grateful 😅

Highly highly recommend Chet and his team for any of your Nepal treks! You are in the best of hands. Thank you Chet, for everything!

I did the Annapurna Circuit trek with Classic Vacations Nepal last May. It was my solo trek. I had a wonderful time. I talked to several guide services before booking this trek with Chet Bhatta and his company. He delivered all the services as he promised. My guide Lok was nice and gentle. He made sure that I had a good time throughout the trek days. My porter Bisnu was nice, and never complained about carrying my trek bags. He was strong !

Chet took me to a welcome dinner at nepalese restaurant for local food and it was great. He even met me at the end of the trek and we had dinner together. He was always concerned for his services. I have all the great memories with his company. I will come back soon for Everest Trek and I will use his services again.

I trekked to Annapurna Circuit & Tilicho with my brother. Chet Bhatta organized our trek. Our guide Madhu was knowledgeable, and a fantastic person. He knew almost everyone on the trail! Tilicho lake trek was tough but we managed to reach this beautiful lake. Thorong-la was hard but we started earlier than everyone from thorong phedi so we had extra time at the top on this magnificent day.

Thank you Chet Bhatta and Classic Vacations Nepal team for your extraordinary services to our trip.  We enjoyed this trek very much! We had a great time.
