Most people tend to assume that Mount Kailash lies in India. The fact of the matter is, it both does and does not. It does not, as the actual and most worshipped of all, Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, is located in Tibet near Mansarovar Lake. It also does, as there are four other Mount Kailashes that exist in India, which come under the popular Panch Kailash list. In total there are five sacred Mount Kailashes, Mount Kailash (Tibet), Adi Kailash (Uttarakhand), Kinnaur Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash and Manimahesh Kailash (Himachal Pradesh).
Among these, Mount Kailash in Tibet is the first Kailash and has immense spiritual significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and the Bon faith.
However, several mountains in India have an equal significance in the Hindu faith because they resemble and are linked through old tales and pilgrimage traditions to the original Mount Kailash. Therefore, they are often referred to as 'Kailash' though they are entirely separate mountains.
All five of them hold an equal amount of significance, but it is Mount Kailash in Tibet, which is the pilgrimage site of the majority of people all over the world, and it is its mysteriously unclimbed peak and sacred Kailash Parikrama that keep attracting people towards its spiritual appeal. So in this article, we shall cover how many Kailash mountains there are, where each of them is located and what the differences between them are.

Mount Kailash is considered the first and the holiest among the five Panch Kailash mountains. This mountain is in western Tibet and is believed to be the cosmic center of the universe and the abode of the everlasting Shiva. This is unlike the other celebrated mountains where people seek to climb to the peak. The worshipers circumambulate the holy mountain and make Kailash Parikrama. The unique shape and its unique meaning to pilgrims as the most sacred peak in the world, with an unspoiled summit, make Mount Kailash one of the most sacred and mysterious peaks on Earth.

This Kailash is closely associated with the Shiva lake mythology, and this is one of the most approachable Kailash yatras.
Panch Kailash refers to five sacred mountains located in the Himalayas which are sacred to the Hindus and are related to Lord Shiva. The word 'Panch' is Sanskrit for five, and Kailash is considered to be the heavenly mountain of Lord Shiva. Panch Kailash consists of: 1. Mount Kailash (Tibet), 2. Adi Kailash (Uttarakhand), 3. Kinnaur Kailash (Himachal Pradesh), 4. Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash (Himachal Pradesh) and 5. Manimahesh Kailash (Himachal Pradesh).
These are not just mountains geographically, but a holy pilgrimage which is an embodiment or an image of Mount Kailash, the Supreme Shiva abode situated in Tibet. To a devotee, these five are five entrances to Shiva's energy.
Kailash of Tibet is the primary and the first Kailash. But to a devotee who can not go to Kailash, four of the five Kailash peaks located in India have a potent spiritual relation to Shiva. Hence, in reality, Panch Kailash is a series of five sacred Shiva mountains which cross the bounds of the Himalayas and merge into one cosmic idea and not into five distinct peaks.

Panch Kailash means 'five mountains of the Himalaya.' In fact, the mount Kailash of Tibet is the sacred and most worshipable among these five mountains. It is believed to be the prime or original Kailash and also the eternal abode of Lord Shiva, according to the Hindu religion. In comparison to the other four Kailash mountains in India, Mount Kailash holds special significance due to its importance not just in Hinduism, but also in Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion. Thus, this fact makes Mount Kailash the uppermost spiritual authority among all the Kailash mountains.
For travelers, tourists, and pilgrims, this particular Mount Kailash is the supreme destination as it is believed to be the origin and source of the holy energies of Lord Shiva, while the four Kailash mountains - Adi Kailash, Kinnaur Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash and Manimahesh Kailash are the earthly counterparts or local version of the supreme. All five are regarded as holy and spiritual, but only Mount Kailash stands to be common to all the major religions. For this very reason, while choosing one amongst the Panch Kailash to fulfill your pilgrimage, it is Mount Kailash that is known to be the holiest and the truest form of devotion.

Of the five holy Panch Kailash mountains, Manimahesh Kailash should be the most preferred choice by all the pilgrims. It is the easiest and shortest pilgrimage, suitable for beginner pilgrims willing to experience the sanctity of Kailash without the hardships of high altitudes. The trek is less difficult and relatively easy to cover during the brief pilgrimage season.
Second should be Adi Kailash (Chhota Kailash) when the pilgrims gain experience. The place carries more sanctity and resembles the original Kailash Mountain more. Though the path to Adi Kailash involves remote Himalayan journey, it is relatively easy and manageable for the pilgrims to experience the tradition of Kailash.
Once they become accustomed to the high altitude pilgrimages, they may opt for Kinnaur Kailash, which involves high climbs and rougher paths. Next is Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash, which is the hardest among all Shiva pilgrimages in India, considering the high altitude and the distance of trekking. And last is the farthestmost holy point, Mount Kailash in Tibet, referred to as original Kailash, and it is the topmost holy point among all five.
It is a very tiresome route, mainly because of the permit, altitude, distance and remote location of the peak. It should only be undertaken when they are accustomed to other Kailash pilgrimages.

Mount Kailash (Tibet)
Located on the Tibetan plateau in west China, close to Lake Manasarovar, Mount Kailash is in a desert at a very high altitude and in a tough Himalayan environment, so it is the most remote sacred mountain in the world.
Panch Kailash (India plus Tibet border region)
Panch Kailash range span:
Pilgrims spread across the geographically diverse area are hard to compare to a unique place such as Mount Kailash.
Sacredness is revered in these four religions, namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon, in the case of Mount Kailash, as it is the abode of Shiva and the center axis of the universe. Panch Kailash is primarily linked with the Hindu mythology only.
Mount Kailash is very sacred and needs the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Permits are required, it is high altitude travel, and there is a Parikrama of 52 Kms. Panch Kailash, however, comprises several yatras like Adi Kailash Yatra, Manimahesh Yatra and so on. These yatras can vary quite a lot in terms of difficulty, duration and accessibility, so there are generally a number of yatras to choose from.
Mount Kailash
Difficult to access because it's in Tibet. Pilgrims usually travel either through Nepal (access usually with restrictions and through specific permits and groups) or through the official Tibet through specific route permits and groups.
Panch Kailash
Most Panch Kailash are within India and hence easier for domestic pilgrims to access without requiring foreign permits, though some treks require great fitness.
The expense of going to the sacred Mount Kailash is moderate to high. This is due to the cost of traveling internationally, as well as acquiring permits and the logistics associated with being in a remote part of the world.
The extra costs associated with a trip to Mount Kailash include;
Compared to Mount Kailash, the Panch Kailash is significantly less expensive than Mount Kailash. This is because they are primarily found in India and do not require an international permit.
The reduced cost associated with a pilgrimage to Panch Kailash includes;
The highest spiritual home and cosmic power point, Mount Kailash, is a different aspect from Panch Kailash, which represents the aspects of God related to the regional divinity. For most people, a pilgrimage to Panch Kailash is a starting step towards a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.
Of all the five Panch Kailash Mountains, Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash is considered to be the toughest amongst the Panch Kailash yatra. It is recognized as the most difficult pilgrimage by virtue of its sheer altitude, the long distance of the trek, steep ascents, and unpredictable Himalayan climate conditions. To complete the trek, a high level of fitness and mental endurance are a prerequisite and therefore significantly more difficult than other Kailash yatras. Reasons Why Shrikhand Mahadev Is the Toughest:
While planning for your Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, it is important to make a package of your choice considering time, cost and the physical state required for the pilgrimage. You have choices between various packages, from a budget-oriented group journey to an ultimate spiritual journey. Frequently Asked Questions About Kailash Mountains
Why Is Mount Kailash So Important in Hinduism?
Mount Kailash is important in Hinduism as it is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The scriptures say that Shiva is forever meditating at this Holy peak, and this has made Mount Kailash the spiritual center of the Universe. Pilgrims visiting or performing a Kailash Parikrama can free themselves from all the sins and obtain Moksaha.
Why Are There Multiple Kailash Mountains?
"Kailash" represents not just a single mountain peak but a divine manifestation of Lord Shiva in the Himalayan ranges, and hence, there is more than one Kailash Mountain. Mount Kailash in Tibet is the original one. In contrast, the four others have been named to signify a spiritual embodiment and reflections of the primary holy mountain in the different Himalayan ranges of India, namely Adi Kailash, Kinnaur Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev and Manimahesh Kailash.
Which Panch Mount Kailash Can You Climb?
Although there are 5 Panch Kailash mountains, it is believed that one can neither climb to the top of Mount Kailash peak in Tibet (which is strictly prohibited) nor the summits of the 4 Indian Kailash peaks, including Shrikhand and Kinnaur Kailash peak and only a short trek to a particular holy peak like Shivling, a stone that resembles Shivling in shape.
What Did NASA See at Mount Kailash and Panch Kailash?
There is no mention of NASA discovery or official scientific research on any mystic structure or mystery at Mount Kailash and Panch Kailash. Although there is numerous such viral content on the internet and based on spiritual beliefs and legends, science clearly has nothing to support them and has only studied Mount Kailash as a natural mountain.
Can a Helicopter Fly Over Mount Kailash and Other Kailash?
Choppers are restricted from flying over Mount Kailash in Tibet due to the protected religious sanctity of the holy mountain as well as regulations by the Chinese air space. Chopper flights are more often found near the surrounding valleys or near the Indian Kailash peaks. Although they could be permitted for pilgrimage support nearby, it is forbidden to fly directly over the holy peaks.
What Are the 7 Kailash Parvat?
'7 Kailash Parvat' isn't an official designation; rather, in the spiritual context, it may comprise the primary Mount Kailash (Tibet), 5 Panch Kailash and a few other peaks of religious significance which represent Lord Shiva or 'Kailash'. For instance, 7 Kailash could imply the Mount Kailash, 5 Panch Kailash and Sri Kailash, an equivalent to Mount Kailash, in one of the Indian ranges.
