Overview

Everest Three (3) High Passes Trek is the most challenging and strenuous trek of the Everest Region. This adventurous trek combines the three high passes of the Everest Region, namely Renjo-la (5340m), Cho La Pass (5420m)  & Kongma-La Pass (5535m). Including three high passes, this itinerary takes you to the famous Everest Base Camp (5364m), Kalapathar (5545m) viewpoint & Gokyo Ri (5440m) so this trek is truly an ultimate Himalayan trekking experience.

Each pass offers magnificent views of snow-capped mountains including Mt. Everest (8848 m), alpine glaciers, glacier lakes,  ice ridge, and Himalayan landscapes so it is an incredible trip.

On this trek, we will be trekking through Sherpa villages, meeting friendly Sherpa peoples, experiencing their warmest hospitality and vivid culture, traditions.

This trek is off the beaten trek in Everest. This trek takes you to the remote and hidden valleys, which are less traveled so less crowds at trail. This trek is a complete alpine circuit of the rugged Khumbu region mountains.

Highlight Places Of Everest 3 High Passes Trek

Kala Patthar (5545m): Kala Patthar is one of the highlights of this trek. Kala Patthar is a great view point considered as the best place to view the most magnificent sunrise and sunset views of Mt. Everest- the top of the world. Kala Pattar has the most closed up view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumari, Khumbu Glacier.

Glacier Walking (Khumbu Glacier & Ngozumpa Glacier): On this trek, we will actually be walking on two biggest glaciers in the Himalayas. Ngozumpa Glacier starts from the base of Mt. Cho Oyu- sixth highest mountain in the world. It is 36 kms long, the longest glacier in the Nepal Himalayas. We will be crossing this glacier from Gokyo to Cho La Pass walking day. Khumbu Glacier starts from Mt. Everest and the Lhotse- Nuptse ridge. Everest Base Camp is at Khumbu Glacier itself. Khumbu IceFall is also a part of the Khumbu Glacier. It is the largest glacier of Nepal. Cho La Glacier is a small glacier at the top of Cho La that separates Everest Base Camp Valley & Gokyo Valley. We will be walking in this glacier for about40 min on Cho-La pass day.

Everest 3 High Passes Trek Route
All the treks to Everest 3 High Passes start with a trans Himalayan flight to Lukla, then a trek to Namche Bazaar within two days. From Namche, we have two choice of trekking route to 3 High Passes from Clockwise director via Thame, Renjo La, Gokyo, Cho La, EBC & Kongma La, then to Namche Or Anti-clockwise via Tengboche, Dingboche, Kongma La, Lobuche, EBC, Cho La, Gokyo, Renjo La to Namche. Either route you trek, you will trek in the same route but vice versa.

Most of the western companies take the Everest 3 High Passes Trek anti clockwise, but a lot of local companies take via clockwise route. Compared to the views, a clockwise route is recommended, but for better acclimatization, an anti clockwise route is preferred.

Best Time to Trek to Everest 3 High Passes Trek
Like all the other treks in Everest Region, the best time to plan this Everest 3 High Passes are from March to May in Spring months & September to November in Autumn months. These months have excellent weather, clear visibility so you will have the best trekking experience during these months. Spring & Autumn months are known as two best seasons to trek in Everest Region, and all the Nepalese mountains trekking. Early June is also considered as the best month to Everest 3 Passes Trek, but it is windy at the passes due to the dry season in the mountains. December starts heavy snowfalls in the passes areas so it is hard to cross these passes then. December to February are winter months in the mountains so it would often be heavy snowfall in the mountain region above 3000m. High passes are closed due to heavy snowfall during winter months.

Weather Conditions at Everest 3 High Passes Trek
Weather in high mountain regions is often unpredictable. Weather changes very frequently in high passes areas at every hour of the single day. As the weather changes, it affects the temperature as well. Even at the best months recommended, it is rare but could rain, snowfall, cloudy, windy and get extremely cold as temperature drops down. At 3 high passes, on good weather days, the temperature expected is from negative 10 degree celsius to negative 20 degree celsius. In adverse weather conditions, temperature could drop down to negative 25 to 30 degree celsius so you should have the proper clothing and trek gear for safe trek to Everest 3 High Passes. In addition, please prepare yourself for unforeseen weather circumstances while trekking in these high passes.

Important Trip Note

Respect the altitude and the weather.
Weather in the high Himalayas is unpredictable, and snow can block passes with little warning. Always check local conditions before attempting each pass and be flexible with your schedule. Carry extra days in your itinerary for contingency. Having travel insurance with emergency evacuation is also highly recommended, as helicopter rescue may be the only viable option in emergencies.

Meals

Nepali Food

Meals on the Everest Three High Passes Trek are provided at local teahouses and are typically simple, hearty, and energy-rich to support the demands of high-altitude trekking. A typical day begins with breakfast options such as Tibetan bread or chapati served with jam or honey, pancakes, porridge or muesli, eggs in various styles, and hot drinks like tea, coffee, or hot lemon. Lunch and dinner usually include staples like dal bhat—a traditional Nepali set meal of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles—as well as fried noodles or rice, Sherpa stew, momos (dumplings), pasta, and various potato dishes.

Accommodation

Hotel during trek

Accommodation is in teahouses—simple but cozy lodges run by locals. Here’s what to expect:

  • Rooms: Twin-sharing with basic beds and blankets; a sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C is recommended.

  • Bathrooms: Mostly shared; higher altitudes may only offer squat toilets.

  • Showers: Available in most places for a small fee; hot water is often solar or gas-heated.

  • Electricity & Charging: Available in most villages; fees may apply for charging phones or batteries.

  • Wi-Fi: Available in major stops (Namche, Gokyo), but often slow and unreliable at higher altitudes.

Despite the simplicity, the hospitality is warm, and teahouses provide a vital rest spot after challenging trekking days.

Book with Local Agency:
Locals know it all, they are well updated to the current situation, trekking routes, and they are far more reasonable than international agencies. Local agencies are far more flexible when it comes to dates, rates and customization than international agencies.

Know About Altitude Sickness:
Before any trek, you should consult with your health professional for the relevant immunizations and information regarding medication and altitude. The key in our experience is to allow plenty of time for your body to adjust to the altitude – you can't rush the mountains – and we abide by the climber's maxim – "climb high and sleep low”. We especially encourage those travelers from areas of low sea level to always have a little more time up their sleeve so they can allow for extra rest days if needed. Trekking in Nepal means you are walking above 2500 meters, resulting in a high chance of suffering from altitude sickness no matter how fit you are. The altitude sickness mostly occurs above 2400m (8000 feet) and most people can ascend to this altitude without difficulty. However, it is hard to tell who will be affected by Altitude sickness because everyone reacts to altitude differently.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness, Headache, Nausea and dizziness, Shortness of breath, Loss of appetite, Fatigue, Difficulty in sleeping, Lack of body coordination. The most effective way to cure altitude sickness is to stay alert for its symptoms, and if you or any member of your trekking group suffers from it descend to lower elevations as quickly as possible.

Treatment: Diamox (Acetazolamide):
Diamox (Acetazolamide) allows you to breathe faster so that you metabolize more oxygen, thereby minimizing the symptoms caused by poor oxygenation. Contact your physician for a prescription. Since Diamox is a sulfonamide drug, people who are allergic to sulfa drugs should not take Diamox. Diamox has also been known to cause severe allergic reactions to people with no previous history of Diamox or sulfa allergies.

Walk at your own Pace:
Walk slow and steady, rather than having to walk faster and stop frequently. Stop when you want to, sit back and relax, catch some breath, feast your eyes with the panorama, and take plenty of photographs. There are no rewards for those who reach or complete the trek first. By being slow and steady, you keep your heartbeat fairly constant, use less energy and cover more distance. There are also a couple of rest days which are included in the itinerary, to get acclimatized to high altitude, before going any further up. So, do not rush, the Himalayas are there and aren’t going anywhere.

Know About Nepal:
Before heading to Nepal, learn and get to know about Nepal. Do little homework about the culture and lifestyle, a bit of geography and history. It will surely come in handy and even help you overcome some of the cultural shock you (tourist/travelers) may face in Nepal. Also learn some basic local phrases to get you through Nepal.

A simple Hi/ Namaste or Thank You with a smile will definitely break the cultural barrier with the locals and help you get through loads of difficulties.

Drink Fluids/ Water:
You tend to get dehydrated quickly when trekking in high altitude. So, drink plenty of fluids and water during your treks in Nepal to keep yourself hydrated.

Note: Fluid does not mean beer or any other alcoholic beverages.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How difficult is the trek?

This is a strenuous, high-altitude trek best suited for experienced hikers. Daily trekking hours can range from 6–9 hours, often at high altitudes.

  • Do I need a guide?

While the trek can technically be done independently, hiring a licensed guide is highly recommended due to the remoteness, risk of altitude sickness, and navigational challenges over the passes.

  • Is altitude sickness a concern?

Yes. The trek reaches elevations above 5,500 meters. Proper acclimatization days (e.g., in Namche and Dingboche) are essential, along with hydration and gradual ascent.
