Annapurna Circuit Trek is the most classic trekking in the entire Annapurna region. No doubt, Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. This trek is very scenic, incredible with landscapes and Himalayan valleys. This trek offers magnificent views of the Annapurna massif itself and incredible views of Annapurna region Himalayan panorama.

This trek involves walking mainly in two river valleys, Marshyangdi River Valley and Kali Gandaki River valley encircling the massive Annapurna, and all the Annapurna region mountains peaks throughout this trek.

The first leg of this trek is natural, walking through the farming villages and green valley’s so it is beautiful walking. Manang, the most amazing village in Marshyangdi valley offers magnificent towering views of Annapurna’s peaks and mountains. Manang is a great Himalayan valley with incredible landscapes, views, typical Manang villages and its peoples.

Tilicho Lake Trek:
Tilicho Lake, situated at approx. altitude of 4919m from sea level, is the highest altitude situated lake in the world. Tilicho Lake is incredible. Massive towering view of Tilicho Peak (7134m) and panorama of other Annapurna peaks are spectacular from here.

This lake trek is through the rough trail, less developed and has some steep section trek trails. Tilicho Lake trek separates from Manang to Khansar village, then to Tilicho Base Camp hotel to Tilicho Lake, then return to Yak Kharka to join Annapurna Circuit Trek route.

Important Trip Note

This extended trek combines the high-altitude adventure of the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake with the culturally rich and arid landscapes of Upper Mustang, making it both physically demanding and logistically complex. One of the most critical things to plan for is altitude acclimatization—particularly before crossing the Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and visiting Tilicho Lake (4,919m), where the trails are remote, narrow, and prone to landslides. Adequate rest days, hydration, and gradual ascent are essential. In Mustang, prepare for stark, dry conditions and strong afternoon winds.

Since the Mustang region is a restricted area, you’ll need a special permit and must travel with a licensed guide. Weather can vary greatly—from monsoon rain in the lower Annapurna region to dry desert winds in Mustang—so pack layers suitable for all climates. Finally, due to the trek’s length and remoteness, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation is highly recommended.

    • 4hours

Today, the trek to Thorong Phedi will be slow and steady along with the great mountain landscapes section in Annapurna. Short walk from Yak Khadka brings us to Ledar. We ascend furthermore, then a section of two trails reaches. On regular Spring/Autumn days, we will descend to the river valley, across the river at a wooden bridge, gradually uphill, then follow a cliff trail (that involves dry landslide sections of mountain hill as well) toward Thorong Phedi. If it is windy or snowy or winter month, we will be walking gradually uphill toward the left side of the mountain hill for 40 min, then a descent to the river, across the river at a wooden bridge, then ascend to Thorong Phedi.

Thorong Phedi is a base of Thorong- la, and has few guest houses to accommodate us for a night prior to heading to Thorong-la pass the next morning.

We also have the option to climb to Thorong High Camp (4880m), which takes about an hour's steep ascent from Phedi, making the Thorong-la pass shorter for the next day. However, sleeping at Thorong Phedi is safe and you will have a sound sleep.

    • 5416m

    • 8-9hours

Today is the most challenging as well as interesting day of your hike in Annapurna Circuit. You will have to wake up early in the morning ( about 3.30 am), have a quick breakfast, then prepare to hike at 4.30 am from Thorong Phedi.

First hour walk to High Camp is steep uphill but easy to navigate. From High Camp, the trail goes uphill toward Thorong La (mostly gradual with some short steep hill up at a few times), and it is harder to navigate if it is snowing or covered by snow or ice, however, your guide is experienced in this route so gently follow him. Within 4-5 hours of your uphill, you will finally reach the top of Thorong La ( 5416m), the highest pass in the world, and highest point of Annapurna Circuit Trek. Signboard of Annapurna Circuit, Thorong La pass (5416m) congratulates you at the top with Buddhist prayer flags. It is the best spot for photography. You will have an incredible view of the pass with Thorong Peak and surrounding mountains and Himalayan landscapes from Thorong Top. Thorong Top has a tea shop to buy hot coffee on this cold morning.

From the Thorong Top, the trail descends to the mountain ridge, then a steep and long descent to the Phedi, toward Mustang Valley and Muktinath. Descending is a relief from the altitude but it could be harder for your legs and knees so you should walk slowly and carefully. After a short tea or lunch break at Phedi, we will have a nice and pleasant descent to Muktinath. Overnight stay in Muktinath.

Today’s walk is through perhaps the driest part of Mustang, and much of our energy will be spent negotiating the loose, dry soil. However, the magnificent views of the countryside, from the gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountains in the east and west, more than compensates for the hard climb. Finally, we come to Charang, a large spread-out village at the top of the Charang Chu canyon. At the eastern end of the village are a huge dzong [fortress] and a red gompa (monastery), which houses an excellent collection of statues and thangkas.

Things to Know About Annapurna Circuit via Tilicho Lake & Mustang Trek – 25 Days

The Annapurna Circuit via Tilicho Lake & Mustang Trek is a remarkable long-distance trek that blends diverse landscapes, high mountain passes, sacred lakes, and Tibetan-influenced desert terrain. This extended route begins in the lush, subtropical valleys of the Annapurna region, ascends through pine forests and high alpine meadows, and reaches the breathtaking Tilicho Lake (4,919m)—one of the highest lakes in the world. After crossing the challenging Thorong La Pass (5,416m), the trek descends into the Kali Gandaki Valley and veers into the culturally rich, restricted region of Upper Mustang.

The most diverse trek I've ever done.
4.45

I’ve done several treks in Nepal, but none as varied and intense as this. Starting in lush green valleys and ending in Mustang’s desert terrain felt like crossing several countries on foot. Tilicho Lake was a frozen mirror surrounded by silence—it was absolutely surreal. The climb to Thorong La was brutal, but the sense of achievement was worth it. Lo-Manthang was a cultural gem—so different from what I imagined Nepal to be. It’s a long, demanding trek, but one that gives back tenfold.

"I’ve guided over 15 treks on this route, and it never gets old. I always remind trekkers: this is more than just scenery. You are walking centuries-old trade routes, visiting holy sites, and meeting people whose lives are shaped by harsh but beautiful landscapes. Respect the altitude, be flexible with weather and conditions, and this trek will stay with you forever."
